Baby Stroller Maintenance Guide

Most baby strollers are not too expensive. You can often walk away from your computer with a smile on your face after landing a great bargain at one of the numerous online stores you can visit to order virtually any type of stroller.

The effort of keeping your stroller in a functional state, so that your baby can enjoy it for a long time to come, however, can be more difficult than you may have anticipated. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to make sure that the stroller you bought stays in full working order.

Choosing a Sturdy Product

Even though some parents only choose to have one child, and they don’t think there’s a need for a stroller to last longer than 3 or 4 years, until their toddler doesn’t need it anymore, the fact is that choosing a cheap stroller over a sturdy one is not a good bargain.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that a stroller can’t be both cheap and sturdy depending on the brand, it can be possible to find such a model. However, the fact is that the safety of your baby should always come first, and, for that purpose, you will need to make sure that the frame construction, wheels, and seat are all compliant with the highest possible standards.

Also, if you want to buy a type of stroller equipped with special features such as suspensions, one-step folding technology, and adjustable handlebars, you should check all of these add-ons to make sure they work correctly before buying the stroller.

Don’t be fooled by how “cool” and stylish the stroller may look, because if you can’t get it to work properly, all you will have gained is a nice piece of decoration for your kid’s room.

Component Maintenance

While most modern strollers are built to the highest standards of safety and reliability, proper maintenance applied to each part of the device is the best chance you have of keeping your stroller in perfect condition for a long time to come.

There are four basic components that every model is equipped with which need constant care, cleaning, and maintenance. These are the fabric, frame, wheels, and tires of the stroller.

  • The Fabric

Most baby strollers come with a type of special fabric treated to withstand outdoor use, including extreme exposure to elements such as rain or sunlight. Despite this fact, they are not indestructible, and they still need to be properly cleaned and taken care of. When cleaning the fabric, first brush off any larger debris, and then use only warm water and a mild variety of soap. Don’t use any bleach or detergents, as this could damage it. Also, avoid storing the stroller in the sun, and make sure you let it air-dry before folding it.

  • The Frame and Wheels

Modern strollers come equipped with aluminum alloy frames; however, some of them still have metal parts that can rust. Wheel spokes and springs should constantly be sprayed with water and then properly dried. The use of special rust-inhibiting products may also be required, especially if you live near the ocean.

The axles should be wiped down and the wheels lubricated at least once every couple of months or so. Silicone-based lubricants may be the best choice in this regard, as oil-based products may easily grind down the axles.

  • The Tires

Finally, just as in the case of a bicycle or a car, the stroller’s tires can still wear out, and punctures can occur at times. If this is the case, you should be able to handle the problem with the help of your basic bicycle kit. Also, follow the instructions to make sure that you pump the right amount of pressure when inflating the tires.

Keeping Your Stroller in Good Shape for a Long Time

Now, even the most modern strollers are not that complex, so you won’t need to be a rocket scientist to use a few simple maintenance procedures to keep them working for a long time. Keep in mind, however, that a little care goes a long way, and even with the sturdiest, most expensive models, problems can occur. If you follow these basic tips, however, there’s no reason why you and your children can’t enjoy your new baby stroller for many happy years to come.
